THE year is 1912 and the people of Romsey crowded into Church Street to catch a glimpse of the town’s new steam-powered fire engine.
As firemen got up steam in the engine, a horse has to be kept under control close by, while outside the old boot stores a mother can be seen pushing a pram containing two babies wearing bonnets.
The fire engine caused quite a stir, as underneath the shop awning a milkman with his horse and cart, carrying two large churns, stops on his round to see the new contraption.
