CHILDREN in Southampton schools chess tournament began a three day series of battles across the board on January 2, 1980
The popular tournament held at the Education Centre in Argyle Road, Southampton, attracted nearly 100 youngsters in five age groups.
Keith Robinson, then-Southampton Schools’ League secretary, said this was in spite of late notice to schools caused by doubts over whether the premises would be available because of local authority cuts.
