THE M27 and much of Southampton was brought to a standstill following a concern for welfare call.

Hampshire motorists faced travel chaos after a stretch of motorway between Nursling and Eastleigh was closed.

It came after a welfare call with reports of someone on a bridge over the motorway.

The incident sparked traffic chaos across Southampton, Eastleigh and North Baddesley as drivers were diverted and sought alternative routes.

Motorists were urged to avoid Bassett Avenue and Winchester Road where the incident had a significant impact according to the city council.

Road chiefs shut the M3 southbound at junction 14 where it meets the M3.

Bus operator Bluestar reported significant delays to the majority of its services due to congestion.

According to the bus company all of its Barton Peveril College routes were impacted.

Traffic travelling on the M27 faced a half hour delay before being diverted up the M3 while drivers coming down the M3 towards the M27 were taken off through Eastleigh.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) supported police throughout.

As reported by Hampshire Police, the incident was safely resolved and all closures on the motorway were lifted by around 9am.

A police spokesperson said: "We are pleased to confirm the incident has been safely resolved and all closures on the motorway are being lifted. Thanks for your patience while we dealt with this incident."
