A NEW retirement accommodation building could replace a former police station site.

McCarthy and Stone developers have now submitted revised plans to redevelop the site on Jones Lane, Hythe.

It comes after they submitted an original planning application in 2017, which proposed a contemporary design.

But the design has been changed in response to a subsequent appeal decision.

The plans propose 33 one and two bedroom retirement living apartments, with a shared communal lounge, guest suite and house manager’s office.

Plans state there will be 23 parking spaces, with retained access from Jones Lane, new landscaping, tree planting and boundary treatments.

The revised plans include giving the design a "traditional" appearance, with a series of individual buildings relating to the character of neighbouring buildings and the adjoining conservation area.

But a public document shows at least seven people have objected to the plans.

One Hythe resident said: “What we need is affordable accommodation for young people, flats or masonettes for either young couples or singles, but something other than another retirement complex.”

Another said: “This development will not bring local long term jobs into the area nor will it not enhance the street scene or bring any major economic benefits."

But the developers hit back by saying the accommodation is “much-needed”.

Shane Paull, regional managing director at McCarthy and Stone, said: “Our design has been completely revised to ensure a traditional design that will enhance the appearance of this derelict site and respect the character of neighbouring buildings and the conservation area.

“We strongly believe our revised plans for Hythe represent an important opportunity to deliver much-needed specialist retirement living accommodation, which will improve housing choices for older residents, whilst regenerating a disused brownfield site that is sustainably located close to shops and services.”

A final decision has not yet been made.
