IT was deemed to be nothing more than rubbish as it was unceremoniously dumped over the side of a ship more than a century ago.

But then, in 1974, as Southampton’s Itchen Bridge began to take shape, the old cannon resurfaced as a long-lost treasure during the building work.

The five-foot long iron cannon was found in a trench by workmen using a mechanical digger in Albert Road, near the former Floating Bridge.

Daily Echo:

Dating back to the Napoleonic wars, the cannon, which weighed in at about half-a-ton, would have been discarded when the smoothbore weapon went out of service.
