IT IS an alternative craft beer bar in the heart of Southampton which is passionate about board sports and providing “outstanding beer”.

Beards & Boards opened its doors for the first time just last September.

True to the pub’s name each beer tap is mounted on a skateboard.

Its name is a tribute to skateboarding culture as well as alternative, rock, Pop-punk and surfer-punk styles of music.

Located in Bedford Place, it boasts ten beer lines, three cask beers and four draft ciders.

All wines, spirits and soft drinks are vegan and only two beers are not vegan.

Before becoming the pub it is today the building housed a charity shop and before that a butchers.

The new business is owned and managed by Toby Jackson and Phil Maggs.

The duo revamped the premises in just seven weeks, decorating it with graffiti and kitting it out with a games console and record decks

According to Toby, 32, things have been going well, and he hopes the pub will create a community of people with similar interests and bring people together.

Toby, who used to manage Overdraft in Shirley said: “I used to manage a pub before and they were doing well so I thought make my own stamp.

“Everyone who comes in compliments the music and enjoys the atmosphere we have created. There is nowhere in Bedford place offering Pop-punk or Skate-punk. There are always nice people and a good atmosphere.”

The pub is both child and dog-friendly. It also serves coffee.

Despite not serving meals the watering hole has a “bring your own” food policy.

On Thursdays, there is a “bring and spin” event for punters to bring and play their own vinyl. While on Tuesdays there is a student night offering a 10 per cent discount off beers and cask beers costing £3.
