THE date is March 29, 1952 and Southampton is covered in snow as this photograph, taken in the Avenue, clearly shows.

Gale force easterly winds blew in the white stuff right across the south coast making it one of the coldest ends to March for many years.

Although the road out of Southampton was clear enough for this old timer of a vehicle as it passed by the Cowherds pub, in other parts of the region there were blizzards and deep snow drifts.

Daily Echo:

The snow caused transport chaos and some villages in the rural parts of Hampshire were cut off from the rest of the county by the wintry storms. The snowfall, together with the strong winds, pushed temperatures down to as low as minus 10C.
