THIS was the scene 90 years ago as a Spartan bi-plane took a flight over the port of Southampton’s Eastern Docks.
Produced by the Simmonds Aircraft Co, which was founded by Oliver Simmonds, the Spartan prototype was actually built in his Southampton home in Woolston and then assembled at the Rolling Mills which once stood near Weston Shore.
After the company rented a hangar in Hamble, a total of about 50 aircraft were put together and flown from the local airfield.
