THE date is February, 1969, the bulldozers move in and a historic part of Hamble is demolished and becomes just another memory.

The thatched cottages stood in Satchell Lane for morethan 200 years and despite strenuous efforts by the parish council and Hamble Protection Society to delay the demolition, the authorities finally gave the go-ahead for the homes to be razed.

The Daily Echo reported at the time: “As flames consumed the ancient rafters and picturesque thatch, the violent east wind swept dense smoke across Satchell Lane to nearby houses, smearing windows and smothering curtains and white paint with greasy black smuts – symbolic mourning which was not appreciated by the resident.’’
