On July 1, 1930 the people of Southampton at last saw the start of construction of a new Civic Centre following years of wrangling over where the council offices should be built.
According to the front page story of that day’s edition of the Daily Echo a crowd of 20,000 witnessed Prince Albert, the Duke of York ceremonially lay the foundation stone of the building.
The duke together with his wife, the Duchess of York returned to Southampton two years later to officially open the Civic Centre’s south block.
It was in 1939 that the final phase of construction was complete with the opening of the Civic Centre’s north block, two years after the first event was held at the Guildhall.
