A SOUTHAMPTON man who stole a handbag and assaulted a police officer has been jailed.
Alexander Charles Dibden, 36, stole the handbag from Debenhams in Southampton on January 23.
He also assaulted a police officer on the same day in Southampton and used threatening or abusive words or behaviour, which were said to be racially aggravated.
Appearing at Southampton Magistrates' Court, Dibden, of Wallace Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to one count of theft, one count of assault and one count of racially aggravated harassment.
Dibden was sentenced to a total of 24 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £100 in compensation.
