A “SELFISH” Southampton man who chucked rubbish out of his car as he drove around one of Hampshire’s most exclusive areas was caught because a piece had his name written on it.

Ryan Ship, 25, lobbed plastic packaging out of a vehicle as he travelled through leafy Chilworth.

But one of the pieces included a label with his name printed on it.

When Ship was quizzed by council officers, he said he was “too busy” to properly dispose of the waste – left over from vinyl flooring work which he had recently completed.

Now Ship has been hit with a £2,000 court bill after admitting fly-tipping the waste.

Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard how Ship threw the waste out of his car in multiple locations along Chilworth Old Village.

The court heard Ship had disposed of his waste along the road, slowing down to throw it out of his car each time.

Ryan Ship, from Cowley Close, Shirley, admitted to one count of fly-tipping waste.

He was given a £963 fine and ordered to pay a £96 victim surcharge, as well as the council’s costs of £1,076, bringing his total to £2,135.

Test Valley Borough Council's Environmental portfolio holder, councillor Alison Johnston, said: “It is simply unacceptable to treat our borough in this way. I’m really pleased that we have been able to prosecute the person responsible and I thank the environmental service staff for their work on this case.

“This particular waste would arguably only make up half a black sack, so to be dumping it in multiple locations along a road is incredibly selfish.

“Our message to those who think they can get away with this is simple; if we find sufficient evidence, we will seek to prosecute you.”

“Instead of a single trip to the Household Waste Recycling Centre or equivalent, this person had to spend a day in court and has ended up with a criminal record and a sizeable amount of money to pay. It is simply not worth it.”
