A ROMSEY road has been named after a late councillor who served for almost 20 years.

Councillor Nigel Anderdon, who represented the Chilworth, Rownhams and Nursling ward, passed away on January 8, 2020 at the age of 88.

Following his funeral this month, it was decided one of the new roads in a new Rownhams estate, Broadleaf Park, would be named Anderdon Avenue.

The new Taylor Wimpey estate will have road names named after a number of local links, include parish council members and nearby farms.

Councillor Phil Bundy, a fellow ward councillor for Chilworth, Rownhams and Nursling, said: "Nursling and Rownhams Parish Council were requested by TVBC and Taylor Wimpey to provide suggestions for road names for their new development, Broadleaf Park, in Rownhams.

"It was agreed to use names that had a local connection.

"Following the recent passing of Cllr Nigel Anderdon, it was agreed that one of the roads would be called Anderdon Avenue in recognition of the contribution that Nigel made to village life."

Another suggestion for the road names was bird names but it was quickly decided local connections were better suited for the development.

Cllr Phil Bundy added: "I am really pleased that all parties involved have agreed with the proposal, it took a little while as the names were given to the Royal Mail in order to set up post codes and make sure there was no conflict in the immediate area."

The other roads in the estate are named Harrison Way, after Eric Harrison, a former chairman of the Nursling and Rownhams Parish Council, Snowden Close, after Bob Snowden, also a former chairman of the Parish Council, Shutler Close, after Alan Shutler a past member of the Parish Council, Grace Close, after Miss Grace, a former teacher at the Old School, now the Community Centre in Rownhams, who taught several generations, Babey Avenue, after Mike Babey, the farmer of the land on which Broadleaf Park exists and Parkers Drive, after the original name for Parkers Farm.
