HAMPSHIRE MP Suella Braverman has been sworn in as Attorney General.

She was joined by her family during a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today.

In her new role Suella will be the chief legal adviser to the Crown.

She will deal with the legal aspects of all major international and domestic legal action involving the government.

Commenting on the ceremony the Rt Hon Suella Braverman QC MP said:

“It is a privilege to be sworn in as Attorney General and a moment I will cherish as the second woman to be appointed to this historic role.

Restoring confidence in the criminal justice system is my top priority.

"I want to thank my predecessor for his work in this area and his distinguished service to Government.

"I want to thank the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice for their kind words.

"I look forward to working with them both in the unique roles we each play in upholding the rule of law at the heart of the UK constitution.”

Also attending the ceremony was the Lord Chancellor, the Rt Hon Robert Buckland who said: “I am delighted to welcome the new Attorney General to this vital and historic role.

“The relationship between the Law Officers and the Lord Chancellor is a crucial one.

"I look forward to working closely with the Attorney on matters relating to the rule of law, which is the cornerstone of our democracy and a major factor in our success as a civilised and prosperous nation.”

Ms Braverman, who was first elected as MP for Fareham in 2015 replaces the Rt Hon Geoffrey Cox in her new role.

She has previously had stints in the Education Select Committee and the Education, Skills and the Economy Sub-Committee, and opened a Westminster Hall debate in the House of Commons discussing alleged failings of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Her appointment came after Sajid Javid dramatically quit as chancellor earlier in the month after Boris Johnson ordered him to fire his closest aides.

Called to the Bar in 2005, Suella Braverman specialised in public law and judicial review.
