TWO presenters at a Southampton radio station will be hosting a 24-hour broadcast show in aid of a mental health charity.

Danny Humby and Oliver Johnson, from student-run station Radio Sonar, are planning to put their on-air skills to the test by getting guests on air, learning songs and raising money for mental health charity Student Minds - from 12pm on March 6 through to 12pm the following day.

It is the Solent University-based station’s first attempt at the 24-hour stunt since launching ten years ago.

The presenters decided to aim for a target of £500 after students voted to donate all money raised to Student Minds.

The charity aims to help students become more aware of the importance of mental wellbeing and encourages conversations about mental health.

Film and television student Danny, who is also the station manager, said: “I wanted to host more charity events and use the facilities that we have to do that.

“We put out a post into our Facebook group as we wanted people to have an input into where the money went, and Student Minds got the most likes and comments."

The station, which usually runs from 8am to 10pm, plans to have as many guests as possible on the show, including ex-students of Solent University.

“We want it to be a fun thing and show people’s experiences of the station - we want to have a good time," said Danny.

He added: “The whole thing is about celebrating Sonar. We want to do more to put us on the map and make a difference to the local community.”
