AN area instantly recognisable but one that's gone through a variety of changes over the past century.

This picture of Guildhall Square was taken 20 years after the end of the Second World War, the scars of those dark days of conflict still visible.

In the autumn of 1965 the Daily Echo reported on the latest redevelopment in Southampton’s Above Bar as planners went about rebuilding the city.

Daily Echo:

“Two down and three to go – the site of the Guildhall Square, showing two demolished temporary shop sites, two in occupation and one toilet,’’ wrote the Daily Echo.

“Right, the southern elevation of Plummer Roddis; background, the Guildhall, all taken in the bright September sunshine.’’
