BACK in Southampton’s Above Bar almost 50 years ago it was all change as traffic was banned from using the street and pedestrians could take their ease where cars, buses and lorries once passed by.
There were some familiar names among the stores at the time in April, 1971 such as the Cadena café, Ratners the jewellers, the boutique Snob, Sainsbury, MacFisheries, Hepworth the tailors and Times’ furniture shop as well as the Odeon cinema.
Just a few months before Triumph Heralds, Austin 1100s, Hillman Imps and Ford Anglias and Cortinas all jostled for parking spaces as they made their way down Above Bar.
