Floating bridge - 1975
CARS can be seen patiently queuing for the floating bridge in this image from 1975.
The looming form of the new Itchen Bridge can be seen to the right of the vehicles – a towering behemoth of scaffolding, metal girders and concrete. The structure reached completion two years later.
Downtown Southampton lay across the water and the two chimneys of Marchwood Power Station can be spotted in the background protruding proudly into the sky.
On Feb 2, 1991 controlled explosions reduced the 425ft stacks to nothing more than rubble.
