BACK in the 19th century, Southampton was a far more rural place than it is today, as this photograph from the 1890s of Highfield goes to show.
Highfield Church stands proud on the hill but the dip with all its trees – now built up and called Church Lane – is an ideal spot for these youngsters of the time to use as a playground.
