SOUTHAMPTON motorists can expect to face travel disruption due to the closure of a major roundabout.

Part of Redbridge Roundabout will close so a new pedestrian footbridge over the M271 can be installed.

The closure will be from Friday, April 17 at 9pm until Monday, April 20 at 6am.

According to Highways England, the M271 southbound section at junction 1 and the north eastern section near Redbridge Towers will be shut.

The rest of the roundabout will be open as usual.

Diversion routes will be in place and will be removed as soon as possible.

However, motorists are being warned that closure dates and times may change.

The work is part of a major Highways England improvement project for the Redbridge roundabout, which is set to cost between £8.5 million and £15.5 million.

Last summer the route was closed so an old footbridge could be demolished.

Highways chiefs say the new bridge is “wider and less steep”.

The Redbridge Roundabout project includes adding an extra lane to ease congestion for vehicles travelling from the motorway to the city centre and the port.

It is hoped the project will relieve traffic congestion, improving capacity and reducing journey times

It is also hoped the new bridge will offer a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists.
