A FUNDRAISING account which was set up in memory of an online Saints fan has been shut down.

It comes after a Twitter account, which said it was run by a Southampton FC fan, went viral on Monday.

A series of tweets on the account show what appears to be a rapid decrease in the user's health.

On Saturday April 25, a social media post by the account warned that the user was in hospital after being taken ill.

A day later a tweet was sent out informing social media users that the owner of the account had died of coronavirus.

The account went viral as hundreds of people, including journalist Jeremy Vine, shared their condolences.

Daily Echo:

But since then, the Twitter account has been regarded as participating in 'unusual activity' while a fundraising account set up has been closed.

The fundraising page, which raised hundreds of pounds, now states: "Due to unforseen circumstances, no further donation are being taken on this acc, all donations to date are being refunded which was organised the evening of Monday 27th April."

A spokesperson for GoFundMe said: "The campaign organiser has stopped the campaign and refunded donations.

"GoFundMe always remains in control of the funds until we are confident they are going to the right place."
