This was the time of real horsepower on the streets of Southampton.
The photograph was taken on Southampton Common late 19th century, on the day that all the corporation horses were brought together for the annual parade.
Not only were all the horses kitted out in their best livery but their handlers also wore their Sunday best for the parade and this official photograph.
The event was one of the big occasions on the local calendar and attracted large crowds to the parade on the common.
