A HELICOPTER and dog unit were deployed this morning as part of a police chase.

It comes after a "suspicious car" was spotted in St Denys Road at around 9.20am and failed to stop for police.

Officers pursued the red Alfa Romeo around St Denys before ending up in Shirley.

Meanwhile, witnesses reported seeing the red car speeding down Shirley High Street followed by two police cars and a helicopter circling overhead.

The driver then dumped the Alfa Romeo at The Dell and made a dash for it on foot before being caught in Archers Road.

The 21-year-old male driver has since been arrested for speeding while under the influence of a controlled drug.

A police spokesperson said: "This started about 9.20am today (May 3) in St Denys Road as a Red Alfra Romeo car failed to stop for police.

"The car was followed around a lot of roads in the St Denys area and then across to Shirley and eventually stopped in a car park in The Dell where a man ran from the car.

"A 21-year-old man from Southampton was arrested a short time later in Archers Road on suspicion of driving at speed while under the influence of a controlled drug.
