PLANS to completely revamp a play park in Eastleigh have officially been submitted.

The application to remove the existing play area at Pirelli Park, and instal new play equipment, was submitted by the Eastleigh Borough Council, and will be decided on by the Eastleigh Local Area Committee.

This forms part of a £300,000 investment into the borough's parks and open spaces, which will see a range of community improvements be made to allow the younger generation to benefit from quality outdoor space.

As previously reported, the funding was given to the Eastleigh Local Area Committee by the developers of North Stoneham Park, and £125,000 of this budget being added to an existing £225,000 to help pay for hard and soft landscaping at the Pirelli Park.

It is proposed that the play park will cater for both younger and older children, including equipment such as swings, monkey bars, a merry-go-round, a basket swing and a variety of climbing equipment and tunnels.

The Northern area will focus on younger children, with the Southern area being mainly for older children, and there will also be new pathways and benches implemented, as well as new trees and shrubs planted.

Also, the existing public art display on the eastern half of the site - The Pirelli Arch - is proposed to remain, along with the perimeter of trees planted around it, to provide some biodiversity to the park.

When the £300,000 investment was announced for play parks across the borough, the Chair of ELAC, Councillor Paul Bicknell believed projects like Pirelli Park would benefit Eastleigh's youth for "many years to come".

He said: "This investment in these exciting projects is in addition to the new play area planned for North Stoneham Park to be completed early spring. This further reinforces ELAC’s commitment to investing in new play areas and public open spaces for our residents, enabling our younger generation to benefit from quality outdoor play areas for many years to come.”

The site is a circular open space, that was previously used as the site of a former cable works factory.

The consultation period for the application period is scheduled to end on May 29.
