ONCE the small fleet of paddle boats were a firm favourite with all the youngsters that visited the boating lake at Southampton’s sports centre but now they are a thing of the past.
No day-out was complete without a trip on the boats, including some with a figurehead of a swan, that were powered around the lake by two handles that turned the paddles.
Besides the paddle boats, such as these in this 1947 photograph, rowing dinghies and canoes could also be hired and taken out on the lake.
