THEY were members of the Home Guard that patrolled in and around the New Forest during the Second World War.

This photograph was taken at the crossroads at East End, not far from Lymington.

The railway carriage, which can be seen behind the group, was used as the detachment’s guardroom while the only source of fresh water for the part-time soldiers was from a nearby well.

Among the military manoeuvres the Home Guard took part in were exercises with Army regiments and American forces.
