THE home bakers of the Sombornes are busy in the kitchen every week to make cakes for the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

The villagers say it is a way of thanking NHS staff working flat out at the hospital.

The cakes are delivered to the hospital by Sian Johnston, above, on ‘Cake Friday’.

The drop-off is Thursday afternoons at Ms Johnston’s house on Winchester Road, Kings Somborne.

She said: “This is a very simple thing for us all to do each week and will show the wonderful NHS frontline workers, that we are thinking of them.

“I have done four Cake Fridays now and we have donated 227 so far! King’s Somborne has a great team of cake bakers, old and young, and all seem to enjoy the weekly event. There have been some lovely appreciative messages and calls from staff all over the hospital. We intend to support the NHS this way until a degree of normality returns. A simple thing for us to do for some special people.”
