AFTER years of forlornly rusting away in a scrapyard in Wales, the old Eastleigh-built steam locomotive number 30828 was on the move again back in March, 1981.
This photograph shows the locomotive making its way ever so slowly along the A33 en route to the enthusiasts of the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society, whose members were set to restore the engine back to its former glory.
It took four days for the lorry, carrying the loco, to make its way from Barry in South Wales to Eastleigh where it was welcomed home with a ceremonial bottle of champagne being smashed against the engine.
After years of dedicated work the locomotive was finally restored in September, 1992.
