FIGURES have revealed that Southampton has seen the biggest surge of Internet use in the UK during lockdown, at a rise of almost 50 per cent.

Data by home comparison site Uswitch.com found that people across the city have jumped to a total use of 44 hours and 36 minutes a week on average.

With most of the increased usage being work-related, it also saw the highest increase and usage in social media use, at an average of nine hours and 36 minutes.

Time spent working from home is up by two thirds across the UK, while broadband use for school work has climbed by a third, and video calls are up by half.

Although Southampton has seen the highest increase, London has the overall Internet use at an average of 54 hours each week.
