BUSINESSES across Hampshire are being warned of disease lurking in their water systems.

Businesses reopening after the lockdown are being urged to assess the risk of Legionella bacteria.

Stagnant water in pipes and plumbing can lead to bacteria growth which can cause the fatal Legionnaires' disease.

Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle pains, and headaches.

Public Health England (PHE) is urging business owners to carry out risk assessments and use a water safety plan.

Businesses advised to take action include dental practices, hair dressers, hotels, gyms, sport clubs and offices.

PHE says all aspects of water management systems need to be reviewed before a business reopens.
