A MAN has been rushed to Southampton General Hospital with severe burns following a fire at a Chinese takeaway.

Crews from four fire stations - including St Mary's in Southampton - were sent to The Wonderful Eat in Copnor Road, Portsmouth, after the blaze broke out this afternoon.

Copnor Road was closed in both directions after the fire started out in the kitchen of the takeaway.

According to reports, six ambulances and four engines were sent to the scene and an air ambulance landed in nearby College Park.

Posting on social media South Central Ambulance Service said paramedics treated a "number of casualties".

This evening one man was reported to have been rushed to hospital in Southampton with what were described as severe burns.

Crews from three fire stations - Portchester, Southsea and Cosham - carried out post-incident fire checks at neighbouring properties before returning to their bases.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) tweeted: "Fire investigation officers remain on the scene."
