NEW research reveals property prices in Southampton are up to 16 per cent higher where schools are rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

A recent study by the mortgage experts at comparethemarket.com revealed that the average house price is £350,000 in the city.

But in areas with outstanding schools due to analysis by inspectors, this rises by 16.08 per cent to £406,268.

Although it isn't as pricey as cities like London and Swindon, the average areas across Southampton that do not have schools with the 'outstanding' rating are cheaper by £56,268.

It was regarded as the eighth most expensive city, with Warrington coming up top at a £266,667 price difference between its areas.

Mark Gordon, director of money at comparethemarket.com, said: “Living within the catchment area of schools rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted is a top priority for parents wishing to give their children access to the best quality of education.

"The cost of living in these high-demand areas can be a big concern for families, who often face a trade-off between house price and quality of education. However, our latest research reveals that it is possible to still reap the educational benefits without the price tag."
