An Army recruit was shot dead and two others injured a gunman in Lichfield, Staffordshire. The attacker was thought to have been a member of the IRA.
June 7
West Germany , Italy and France lifted the bans on British Beef that were put into place during the BSE outbreak.
June 14
Plans for a high-speed rail link between London and the Channel Tunnel was scraped .
