CHILDREN across the city are coming out of lockdown with money in their pockets, earning more than £30 every week.

It was revealed that parents are paying their children more than ever for their chores, according to recent figures by shopping comparison site Idealo.

The data found that children in Southampton are earning up to £7.50 for chores, while the average payment for household tasks is £3.08.

Parents across Britain were quizzed to see if lockdown had made an impact on pocket money earnings, with Southampton children able to pocket up to £30.80 per week if they complete chores such as ironing and feeding pets.

While some children in Southampton are being paid £7.50 on average for brushing their teeth.

For parents that prefer to pay their child weekly pocket money rather than by chore, the average amount has risen 27 per cent year-on-year from £7 to £8.91 in the UK during lockdown.

In Southampton, 19 per cent of parents give their children pocket money regardless of chores, and19 per cent of childrenare saving their money rather than spending it straight away.

Five per cent said they are going to spend their money as soon as they receive it.

And when asked how they will spend their pocket money, 41 per cent of city children said they plan to buy toys, followed by 27 per cent who chose clothes as their first purchase.

“Even simple tasks like cleaning your teeth and doing homework seem to be raking in the cash. Now is definitely the time for children to take advantage of their parents’ generosity.”
