A Cleator Moor man has been spared jail after a drink-fuelled assault.

Ian Francis Breckenridge, 36, of Ennerdale Road, appeared at the magistrates’ court in Workington on Tuesday and admitted the offence.

The court heard that on April 6, he assaulted a man in Whitehaven.

He was handed a 12-week jail sentence suspended for 18 months.

Magistrates felt the sentence was justified because the assault was described as a sustained one and carried out after drinking.

It also took place at the victim’s home and magistrates said the nature of the assault “risked greater harm”.

They suspended the sentence to allow for rehabilitation.

Breckenridge must carry out 40 hours of unpaid work and attend up to 10 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days.

A restraining order was also imposed, preventing him from attending his victim’s address until January 2022.

Breckenridge must pay £200 compensation to his victim, as well as £122 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
