Regarding the ongoing correspondence re cycle lanes, particularly in The Avenue.

Whilst experiencing minor delays so far and noting the lack of use by cyclists, many of whom still prefer the pavement, my concern is the congestion that will exist when Saints start to play home games again in front of 30,000-plus spectators.

The main entry to Southampton will be down the Avenue and it doesn’t take a genius to imagine what the gridlock will be like in the hours leading up to game time and also post match.

Not all Saints fans live within walking distance, biking range or on convenient public transport routes.

As well as home supporters, almost all visiting teams’ supporters will arrive by the same route, the exceptions being Bournemouth (if they stay up) and Brighton.

Then throw in the latest offering from the ‘green idea of the week club’ aka Southampton City Council to make the central core traffic free and gridlock beckons.

Oh, and if there just happen to be three or four liners in that day, chaos will be an understatement.

Let’s have a dose of realism please, rather than the woolly appeasement of the green lobby that seems to have the upper hand just now. Traffic fumes from the gridlocks that await are probably more damaging than the normal flow of traffic in and out of the city.
