A PLOT of unused land could be transformed into a new hotel in the city centre should plans be approved by civic chiefs.

Plans have been submitted to Southampton City Council for an eight to 16 storey hotel on the land between Lime Street and Regent Street.

Submitted by developers Invest In Southampton, the proposals apply for permission erect a building on the land on the corner of the two streets that will have 283 hotel rooms and provide up to 60 news jobs.

The hotel would comprise of five to six storeys at the lower level and 15 to 18 storeys in the proposed tower.

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Culture & Homes, said: "Good to hear of the plans for this development.

"It will not only provide much needed local jobs, but be a valuable addition as we cement Southampton as a cultural destination and grow our visitor economy.”

The building will be in a horse-shoe arrangement with the lower section pitched roof development and a tower in two parts rising at the south-east of the site. This arrangement will create a sheltered open public safe in the footprint of the site.

HGP Architects said in their plans: "The concept behind this development is to provide a welcoming and successful reconnection between St Mary’s and the Town Centre.

"On this journey an area of open space is formed, purposeful in its creation with the existing and proposed forms framing this area."

They added that the space created could be used for pop-up stalls, sculptures and exhibitors.

There are plans for a hotel gym with lockers, hotel dining and cafe, a lounge and bar, lobby, and a work hub or conference space.

A proposed 283 hotel rooms are planned for the building compromising of a mixture of both standard rooms and larger hotel apartment rooms.

There are also plans for 46 spaces for bicycles and 33 vehicle parking spaces including four disabled spaces and two electric vehicle charging points.

It is expected that the hotel will create 60 full-times jobs in the city.

The hotel's lobby and cafe will be located on the ground floor.

The site is within walking distance of Southampton Central Railway Station, St Mary's Stadium and Hoglands Park.
