OFFICERS will have the power to stop and search anyone in central Southampton today.

An extension of the Section 60 power, allowing officers to stop and search anyone in the city centre and surrounding areas has been granted.

This extension will be in place from 5pm this afternoon (July 18) until 7am tomorrow morning.

The power has been implemented following a serious assault that took place in East Park on July 16, where a 27-year-old man suffered a single stab wound.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Between 5pm on Friday evening (July 17) and 7am this morning, officers carried out 61 stops.

No arrests were made.
