A small fire had set alight in a plant room, but it was extinguished by staff on site.

Firefighters told our reporter at the scene there was a "small bit of smoke" but there was nothing serious.

Daily Echo:

Fire engines have left the scene however officers remain in the area.

One bystander said that around eight fire engines rushed to the shopping centre and how there were vehicles all down the street.

They added that people were evacuated from the building.

An alarm is reported to have been triggered in the service yard at West Quay Shopping Centre.

Crews carried out further safety checks and left the scene at 12.34pm.

It comes just days after a fire started in the pizza oven of a Westquay restaurant.

On July 16, fire crews were called to Harbour Parade after smoke was seen coming from Franco Manca on Westquay Esplanade at 11.49am.

A small fire was started in a pizza over ducting which was extinguished using a hose reel jet.
