July 14
Reality television game show Big Brother first aired on Channel 4. Craig Phillips went on to be crowned as winner.
July 17
The body of 6-year-old Sarah Payne was found in West Sussex. She had gone missing sixteen days earlier.
July 20
Rioting broke out in Brixton, London, after armed police shot 29-year-old Derek Bennett dead. 27 people were arrested and three police officers were injured.
