PLANNING chiefs have blocked an attempt to alter a Grade II-listed house in the New Forest.

A couple living at Southampton Road, Lymington, applied for permission to build a single-storey extension to the side of their home.

But the application has been rejected by New Forest District Council.

A report to members said the house was one of a pair of early 19th century buildings in the Lymington Conservation Area.

The report said the council's own conservation officer had criticised the proposal, saying the extension would remove a significant gap that provided "an understanding of the original form and evolution of the building".

Lymington and Pennington Town Council lodged an objection, citing the comments made by the officer.

The application said the proposed development would enable the house to meet modern day living expectations, providing the family with space to be together.
