A ROMSEY woman has raked in more than £,1000 after walking hundreds of miles for a cancer support charity.

Rachel Cardy, who lives in Church Street, raised £1,300 for Romsey Cancer Support Centre, Jane Scarth House, since lockdown began in March.

The 63-year-old completed her 670 mile walk on Friday, where she celebrated her fundraising with a glass of champagne at the wine bar, Cork and Bean in Latimer Street.

During the last two miles of her walk, Rachel was also joined by trustee and chair of the Jane Scarth House Fundraising Committee, Elaine Grainger, MP for Romsey and Southampton North, Caroline Nokes, and mayor of Romsey, Cllr Janet Burnage.

Rachel said: "I have been walking every day since lockdown around Romsey, Ampfield and Chandler's Ford for Jane Scarth House, so I have got quite fit now.

"I knew I wanted to do something for Jane Scarth House, because they rely on donations and, due to lockdown, they have not had as many.

"I managed to raise £1,300 and I cannot believe the generosity of everybody who has sponsored me - it has brought tears to my eyes."

The professional hairdresser also works with cancer patients, who have lost their hair, by supplying wigs and offers after-care as well as advice.

She added: "Jane Scarth House is really close to my heart and that is why I set up the cancer support group, Staying Strong, in January 2019, so people have somewhere to go.

"I would like to do another walk for Jane Scarth House in October, during breast cancer awareness month, and I shall invest in some walking boots."
