POLICE closed a Southampton bridge after a man was seen sitting on the railings.
Officers were called to the Itchen Bridge last night at 8.52pm after passerby reported a man to be sitting on the railing of the bridge.
Police spoke to the man and were able to detain him under the mental health act and take him to safety.
The bridge was closed during the time of the incident but has since been reopened.
A spokesperson from Hampshire Police said: "We can confirm that we were called to an incident at 8.52pm last night (10 August) on the Itchen Bridge.
"There were reports of concern for welfare of a man who was sat on the railings.
"Officers arrived on-scene and spoke with the man who was then detained under the mental health act and transferred to a place of safety."
