RESCUE teams went to the aid of a yacht which was disabled after smoke started billowing from from its engine.

Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team said the vessel was drifting close to the shore at Lee on Solent.

The people aboard were transferred to a lifeboat operated by Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS).

The yacht was taken to Gosport, where it was checked by firefighters.

Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team tweeted: "Team tasked to vessel with possible engine fire drifting close to shore in Lee on Solent.

"Casualties transferred to GAFIRS vessel recovered to Gosport for firefighters to check safety. Casualties checked by coastguards and paramedic."

A separate post on Facebook added: "Tasked to support Gosport And Fareham Inshore Rescue Service with a vessel that had suffered engine failure.

"Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service also requested to assist due to possible engine fire. Vessel towed to Hardway Sailing Club for repairs and medical checks for the crew."

GAFIRS said: "Paged this afternoon to assist a vessel which was struggling in choppy sea conditions and called for help when they found smoke billowing from their engine.

"Lifeboat took the vessel into safe haven where HantsFire and Hill Head Coastguard assisted further. Five persons assisted, all safe and well."
