WORK to remove the controversial cycle lane leading out of Southampton is due to begin tomorrow night.

Southampton City Council says teams will be working to remove the cycle way over two nights tomorrow evening and also tomorrow, September 3.

As a result, Basset Avenue between Winchester Road and Chilworth Roundabout will be fully closed between 8pm and 6am on those nights.

Following the works, the road will then become two lanes of traffic once again, after backlash from the public forced the council to bring the trial of the cycle lane to an end.

The council says that cyclists who do not wish to ride in the road will still instead be able to use the existing shared-use paths on both sides of the carriageway.

Daily Echo:

However, the cycle lane between Winn Road and Winchester Road will remain, along with the new 30mph speed limit along the whole length of the at road section.

Further changes are also being implemented too, the council said, this time for buses.

It says that it will be allowing buses to turn right at the crossroads into Burgess Road from The Avenue.
