HAMPSHIRE residents are being urged to 'enjoy summer safely' as part of a new county-wide scheme to attract UK visitors and boost the local economy.

Hampshire County Council has issued a message to residents asking them to "Enjoy Summer Safely" as it continues its campaign to Unlock Summer.

Following a successful bid for Government funding, the campaign will launch ahead of the August bank holiday until mid-September to unlock Hampshire’s potential for day trips and overnight stays aimed at adults, at a more traditionally quieter time of year once children have returned to school.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “With the perfect blend of city, coast and countryside, Hampshire is the ideal place to spend time for a day trip or short break, and we’re very happy to welcome responsible visitors as our local economy starts to recover from the Covid-19 lockdown.”

“This funding will help us spread the word of our Unlock Summer campaign now that most lockdown restrictions have been lifted.

"Local businesses have gone to great lengths to make sure their sites and attractions are safe for visitors so we can all get out a bit and enjoy what we love before the end of the summer.”

Many of Hampshire’s businesses are now open and are excited to welcome visitors. Businesses are adopting Visit England’s industry standard “We’re Good to Go”.

The accreditation is given to businesses that demonstrate adhering to Government and public health guidelines, have carried out a COVID-19 risk assessment and have the necessary processes in place.

VisitEngland Director Andrew Stokes said: “Millions of jobs and local economies depend on tourism right across the country and the industry needs all of us to make sure it gets back on its feet.

"This funding will encourage more of us to get out and discover the outstanding destinations and quality attractions close to home, right here on our doorstep."
