It is a curious thing that in this largely non church going population where criminals flourish undeterred either by the death penalty or the wrath of God (one abolished and the other unproven) the programme called 'Call the Midwife' appears to be popular.

Curious I say because it is full of devout nuns and has a delightful Church of England curate.

Popular I assume because it runs for many hours a week and that must be because the programme planners believe it to be popular.

Perhaps they count the numbers, I don't know how these things work.

Anyway, I love it and rejoice to see religion in action with no attempt to thrust doctrine down our throats or threaten anyone with hell.

Just human love and compassion and humour.

Just what we need in this very troublesome time.
