A new group is using their free time to clean-up local public spaces.

Mundo Limpio, which means clean world in Spanish, is the name of the new Facebook group that has been holding group clean-ups in areas of Southampton, Hamble, Warsash and Fareham.

The group page was founded by Michael Hill after he and his girlfriend lost their jobs because of the affects of the pandemic.

Michael said: "So at the end of June after being on the furlough scheme for 3 months I lost my job due to a huge down turn in the hospitality industry.

"My girlfriend Daniela also lost her job as a waitress days later, due to the restaurant closure.

"Having received the call at 9am I didn't want the rest of my day to be tarnished with negativity so I got myself down to the local park in Locks Heath and picked a huge amount.

"From my posting on social media, I got excellent feedback from my personal page and also local community pages, with people wanting to help."

Since the page was founded, there has been ten official group clean-ups with several other volunteers taking part as well to keep local areas free of litter.

Michael also wants to promote good mental health as a lot of people have been struggling throughout lockdown with social isolation and a potential reduction in income.

He said: "During the clean-ups we like to think that we help provide people with a positive purpose whilst doing discreet exercise.

"Our clean-ups are very diverse & inclusive of all members of society, which we believe leads to a very positive atmosphere."

In the coming weeks, the group will be holding a large community cleanup at Southampton Common, to which they hope to attract over 20 people.
