CUSTOMERS of a Southampton-based energy company have been reassured that there will be no price change following the ending of an existing contract.

Southampton City Council has reassured customers of CitizEn Energy that following the announcement of the ending of the contract with Robin Hood Energy (RHE) all electricity supplies will continue, and that those on fixed price contracts with CitizEn will continue to pay the same price.

CitizEn energy was set up by Southampton City Council in 2018 to offer greener, fairer priced energy to local people, as an ethical, not-for-profit company.

Nottingham Council had set up Robin Hood Energy, dealing directly with energy suppliers, and CitizEn energy became what is known as a ‘white label’ customer of Robin Hood Energy.

A contract was entered into with Robin Hood Energy for five years, but this contract is now ending as a result of the decision by Nottingham Council to sell Robin Hood Energy.

CitizEn energy customers will automatically transfer to a new energy supplier, with those on a fixed price contract continuing to pay the same rate.

A package of measures will be implemented to communicate with CitizEn customers about this change. Assistance will be provided to assist customers to switch if they wish to do so.

Councillor Steve Leggett, Cabinet Member for Green City and Place, said: "We are sad at the sale of Robin Hood Energy, which was completely out of our control. Robin Hood Energy had 100,000 customers, with deals already in place with electricity suppliers, while CitizEn energy has 1,500. Now RHE have decided to sell, our customers will be automatically switched to a new supplier. I want to reassure CitizEn customers that their electricity supply will not be affected during the switch."
