FIRE crews were called out to a chimney fire in Bury on Friday night.

The blaze in Birch Avenue saw crews use specialist equipment to put out the complicated blaze.

Crews attended the scene at around 9.30pm.

The open fire had allowed debris to fall into a faux wall behind the fireplace, meaning crews had to dismantle part of the wall to get to the fire.

A nozzle was also deployed directly down the chimney from the roof.

Firefighters from Bury and Ramsbottom were sent to the scene, spending around 90 minutes there to ensure it was safe.

No one was injured.

Watch Manager Steve Wilcock said: "It was a very technical job but we tried to minimise the damage as much as we could - including sheeting things in the room and moving things around.

"It was a nice demonstration in salvage for the apprentices who were there too.

"It is very important that we keep on top of chimneys, keeping them cleaned and looked after.

"For open fires, people should use fire lighters instead of paper, which can become buoyant and drift up into a chimney."
